About

The author

I am from Aveiro, Portugal. My background is Chemical Engineering and after my graduation I worked in Research at University of Porto, on a Chemical Engineering project, and later at University of Aveiro and Instituto de Telecomunicações on physics projects related to optical fibre sensors.

In 2014, I moved to Edinburgh for a PhD in Physics, at Heriot-Watt University. The research was based on microstructured optical fibre and ways to functionalise them for optical fibre sensors, using ultrafast laser machining in the Applied Optics and Photonics Group within the Institute of Photonics and Quantum Sciences.

After my PhD, in 2018, I worked as Postdoctoral Research Associate in Precision Laser machining and in 2019 I joined the Single-Photon Group to work as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Applied Free‑Space Quantum Communication, within the Institute of Photonics and Quantum Sciences at Heriot-Watt University.

In 2021 I moved to Aveiro, Portugal to embrace a new challenge at University of Aveiro as Postdoctoral Researcher in the Ceramic and Materials Engineering Department, in the formulation and characterization of geopolymers. Later, I joined the Instituto de Telecomunicações, Aveiro to work on Photonic Integrated Circuits for Optical Communications. I am now a Researcher within the Optical Devices and Sensors group, working on chemical optical fibre sensors.

My ORCID profile can be consulted here.

I have been involved in science outreach since 2015. I worked with Native Scientist, an organisation that aims to connect migrant pupils and scientists, by participating and/or organising highly interactive workshops designed to promote science and language literacy among pupils, until 2019. I was mentor (performed the science activity) and later I was Project Manager for Portuguese in Edinburgh for 3 years. During the 4th year I mentored the next Project Manager. The workshops can be seen in the Science Outreach section.
